Petralona Cave

Petralona is one of the most beautiful caves in Greece and a remarkable natural monument located about 35 km from Thessaloniki on the west side of Mount Katsika. In it, Filipos Chatzaridis, a local peasant, found a human skull about a million years old, after which archeological excavations began. It is about two kilometers long and was discovered in 1959. It is about 800 meters from the village of Petralon, and traces of life dating back to the Middle Stone Age have been found there. Scientists have also found traces of the first man (“archantrophos”) here. You can also complete the excursion by visiting the city of Nea Moudania and the beautiful Fisheries Museum.

There are also stone statutes of animals in the area, which is of particular interest to younger children.

Admission to the cave and museum is charged $ 8
