Chalkida

Evia is a new destination in Greece that has not been written about much. What is certain is that, when it comes to Greece, the purity of the sea and its turquoise hue are not absent this time either. Evia is the largest island in the Aegean Sea, and the second largest island in Greece. The only island bigger than Evia is Crete. This is a new tourist destination, but certainly an old settlement, dating back to the Neolithic era, as evidenced by the remains of settlements over 3,000 years old in the central and western part of the island.

The city of Halkida is the largest and most important city of the island of Evia, with more than 80,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most important cities in Greece, north of Athens, and is also one of the 5 largest cities on the Greek islands. Halkida can be reached by car on the road towards Athens, and the city itself is located some 75 kilometers from the capital of Greece.

The city of Halkida is located in the west of the island, separated from the mainland of Greece by the Euripos Pass, which in some places narrows to as much as 35 meters. Two bridges lead across the channel, so the city of Halkida over time expanded from the island to the mainland of Greece.

The fortress located in the city bore witness to a turbulent history, until the great earthquake of 1894, after which the modern city was built. The city has been mentioned since the time of ancient Greece, starting with Homer’s Iliad (Halkis), it developed in the time of ancient Greece, it was very important in the time of the Romans, Byzantium and Turkey, and in 1830 it became part of modern Greece.
