Chania

Chania

Chania is a mountain village located at 1200 m above sea level in a beautiful forest of pine, chestnut and beech.

Chania is 26 km from Volos and 13 km from the village of Portaria. When you leave Portaria towards Chania, be prepared for a lot of bends on the road, which are common throughout Pelion. The village, with its geographical position, actually represents a passage from the eastern to the western coast of Pelion. In ancient times, travelers and merchants stopped here to spend the night and rest, so the village got the name Hania, which means “hostel”. The view from Chania to the Pagasitic Bay is beautiful.

The region around Chania is perfect for winter sports because only 2 km away is the ski center “Agriolefkes” at an altitude of 1529m. That is why there are many guesthouses, small family hotels, for everyone who comes to ski during the winter period. During the summer it is very pleasant here, and many tourists stop in Chania to escape the hot days at the seaside. It was a bit cold for us in July.

There is an excellent selection of local specialties in local taverns. If you are visiting Chania, we recommend you try the traditional “Spentzofai” (sausages with vegetables) and bean soup. There is a souvenir shop where you can buy lots of handicrafts, fruits in sugar syrup, honey, wine and the like.
