Varkes beach

Some 80 miles from Thessaloniki, in the Kassandra Peninsula, is the place of Afytos, with its beautiful beaches. Most of the beaches in the place are named after bars or restaurants located in the immediate area. So Varkes Beach got its name, named after the Fish Tavern, located just above the beach.

Afytos also has Punta Beach (also named after the beach bar), and continues to Varkes Beach. There is no difference for some visitors because the beaches are almost connected.

The name of the beach means “boats, boats” and its name is quite appropriate – you can identify it by the many boats and boats that are located a short distance from the coast. Varkes Beach is sandy, with pure turquoise water, not in some parts decorated – with umbrellas and deck chairs for rent, and in other parts in its “original” form – ready for your deck chairs and umbrellas. Just above the beach is a hill full of vegetation.

The beach should be visited on weekdays, when it is less crowded. On weekends, there is a large number of visitors coming from Thessaloniki, which is an hour’s drive away, so it is a bit crowded, especially in bars and restaurants, where it is difficult to find a free spot.

Varkes Beach, like other Afytosa beaches, can also be visited in the early morning or evening to enjoy a stroll along the sea, as Afytos beaches stretch four kilometers in length.
